"Sharing lunch with Goats on the Roof"

July 2010 — "July 2010 – Old Country Market or better known as Goats on the Roof is a wonderful place for an afternoon lunch. We were told by friends to make sure to get to the restaurant early as it tends to get busy during the summer season, and when we arrived I was amazed to see a line up for reservations. That’s when I noticed the attraction; there are actual Goats on the Roof, grazing on grass, and with their laughing sounds makes for a great experience! The menu of the Old Country Market is simple as they try to adjust and change their menu to the changing eating habits of guests, which I found to be a pleasant surprise. They have more fare foods using lighter oils to cook French fries in and having more vegetarian options. My partner tried their “4 napkin” hamburger and he laughed when the burger came out, it was really big with fresh veggies making it look like a double Decker bugger, but he said it was “sooooo” good. As a fish eating vegetarian, I enjoyed a hearty salad with a home made dressing and fresh bread which was also “sooooo” good. The atmosphere is family orientated and is very welcoming, and the staff is friendly, but one of the attractions is the great Goats on the Roof! "

August 2009 — "We visted Coombs old country market for the 25th year on our way home from Denman Island. Always loved it! But, this year the prices have gone way up! I wanted ia plain baqette but was priced at $7.00 Even granville Island doesn't charge that much. We found all the prices inflated. We left with nothing and don't intend to go back. Too bad we always loved it. "

October 2008 — "I was travelling with a group of friends and on our way back from a trip up Island, one of the ladies said she wanted to stop at Coombs country market. This was the location to buy her favourite licorice just like she used to buy back home in Germany. This place is very well known for its' goats on the roof. This country market had a huge selection of international foods, imported gifts, fresh produce, deli, cheeses galore, icecream, bakery and a restaurant on the one side. We decided to stay and have lunch by seeing what the people in the restaurant were eating. It was nothing fancy. Very basic table and chairs. The Tables were cleared as soon as someone left. They were right on top of it. It was very busy, which indicated this would be a good choice for a quality homemade lunch. You had to line up and order from a counter. We stood in line for about 10 minutes. I didnt mind too much, as there was a large menu board to read and I was having a hard time deciding as it all sounded good. Once we ordered they gave us a number. They would bring your food to your table, which only took about 5 minutes or so. The food prep seemed very quick. The place was packed and very noisy with the marketplace right there beside us. Everything was all under one roof. It wasn’t the type of place you would hang and linger, but if you wanted a break from all the great unique shopping this was a place to refuel. They also had bottled beer and ciders, bottled water, pop & juices. If you wanted a glass of ice water, you could help yourself at a water station. There was 8 of all together and we were able to sit at a table all together. The portions were huge. I had the Thai noodle Salad for $9 and a Corona beer. The salad was served warm and had grilled chicken and a great variety of noodles, sprouts, vegetables. It was very spicy, but good. The only thing I wish I had asked for no onions, it was loaded with red onion, not my favourite, but I managed to pick them out. I could not finish it all. The other ladies ordered the Halibut & chips $11, Vegetarian wrap $8, Quesadilla $8.95, Chicken burger $8.95, Soup of the day $4.95 with Side salad $4.95. Everyones meal was very fresh, hot and enjoyed. The quality of the food & portions proved to be great value for your dollar. They also had a kids menu. This was a very friendly place. "

"A Tourist Must!"

August 2008 — "The Old Country Market is a one of a kind restaurant/mini village that you just can't miss when travelling the central Vancouver Island. It's main attraction is the grass covered roof that houses a family of goats! The restaurant itself has a rustic barn-style decore which you instantly love with tables made out of logs. The menu is large filled with all the homestyle favorites at a very affordable price. There is a separate breakfast and lunch menu so if you are looking for breakfast you better get there before 11am! The Old Country Market is a local and tourist favorite place so you can count on a wait at the prime eating times. A line-up with 10 people in front of you is small! They also provide a large variety of unusual condiments and hot sauces which you can find in the market attached. I make a stop at the Old Country Market Restaurant every time I travel near Coombs. I would definitely say it is a must stop for both Vancouver Island residents and tourists alike. Remember, although the food is good save room for the ice cream! "

June 2008 — "This is our family destination of choice... For food, shopping and entertainment! We will go back everytime! I just wish there were more places like this! We bought fresh fruit and bakery items, as well as numerous imported bars of rich organic chocolate. We ate out in the sun and enjoyed the sun! We also enjoyed milling around the various shops including the Rubber stamp shop, clothing boutiques and book store. The Toy market was the hit of the show... not just with the kids... We found something for everyone! Wooden sheilds and swords for the boys, beautiful cloth and chipbord notebooks for the girls... and a Build it yourself wooden boat for Dad, and tonnes of decorative accessories for mom! This market will blow you all away with it's selection and fabulous prices! And yes.... there were goats living on the rooftop of the market... Neat touch and nice photo op!!!!!!!!! And absolute must for any tourist or visitor to the area! "
